Not adhering to zoning regulations could result in your business getting shut down or not being able to even open. According to Entrepreneur, zoning is the process where governments create zones within its boundaries and assign to each zone rules for what they can be used for. Most cities, for example, have zones for business and residential uses. In some areas, these are zoned in the same zones, while in other areas business zones may be separate from residential zones.
Complicating the zoning laws is that laws may be lenient in some areas and stricter in others. For example, a city may have very strict zoning where business of any kind is prohibited within residentially zoned areas. Other cities may be more relaxed, allowing certain businesses to operate within residential zones, such as daycares or home businesses.
You can usually find out what your local zoning ordinances by going to the town hall in your city or the county courthouse. If you are moving into a location where a previous business was, you usually will be okay, but it is still worth verifying to avoid the hassles that come with setting up a business in an area not zoned for business operations.
